C.R. Avery is a Vancouver based multifaceted musician and spoken word poet drawn to “story-based music” while simultaneously singing, beat-boxing, playing harmonica and pounding the piano. His genius lies in many genres—blues, hip-hop, spoken word, country and rock & roll.
His exhilarating performances have brought him high praise from artists like Tom Waits, while harmonica/blues legend, Charlie Musselwhite said “no one plays harmonica like him, no one.”
LastFM called C.R. Avery “a one man hip hop beatbox blues harmonica Americana iconoclast.”
Avery has recorded twenty-six albums, written and directed musicals that were mounted and performed from New York to venues in Australia and New Zealand, and written books of poetry alongside a career in painting and filmmaking. He has toured the world over the years, headlining or opening for artists such as Billy Bragg, Tom Waits, and Leonard Cohen.
You may remember his performances here many years ago as part of the brilliant, musical spoken word trio, T.O.F.U., which included Penticton spoken word artist Shane Koyczan and American poet Mighty Mike McGee.
